2020 - The Year of Clarity

Seeing through a pandemic

When 2020 began, many of us had hope that it would be a year of change, new prospects and exciting developments in all areas of our lives.

As spring began to unfold, our expectation of new beginnings turned to the realisation of uncertain and unknown notions and the inevitability of facing a new and unwanted dinner guest, COVID-19.

Now, after months of living with this uninvited guest, comes the realisation that this virus has overstayed its welcome and, quite frankly, the novelty's worn off. We also realize that we remain powerless to its velcro-like adhesiveness to our lives.

With COVID-19 we've been through, or are still going through, the seven stages of grief just like we do in other pivotal, life-changing moments in our lives.

First comes shock - "What do you mean this virus is spreading like wildfire?"

Then denial - "No, this virus is just like the flu virus, no worse."

Next up, anger - "What do you mean I have to wear a face mask and keep my distance?"

Bargaining comes next - "Ok I'll wear a mask but can I still have a dinner party?"

And then depression - "I'm so lonely. I miss my family and friends."

After that, testing - "Maybe I can try something new, a new challenge, a new passion."

And finally, acceptance - "I have no power over this pandemic. I accept this and embrace what is to come and how I and humanity will evolve either because of or in spite of it."

Ultimately, thanks to this year of challenges and unprecedented events, many have discovered their resilience. This resilience has culminated in the most surprising, creative, and innovative ideas. Many of these ideas have inspired us to do better, to be better. These ideas got many of us asking ourselves "How can I use my life to better the lives of others?"

Hopefully, you have gotten through this pandemic unscathed so far and that you've come to have a new outlook on both your life and that of your loved ones - one that is set upon the greater good and that taps into the innate good that resides within each of us.

Any idea what spreads greater than a virus?

Love, kindness and hope for all of our communal tomorrows.
